I often find myself thinking in song lyrics. This is one in a series of short articles about some songs and a few of the thoughts that they prompt in me. None of these songs were written for a faith-based setting, but all of them have some elements that relate to faith, philosophy, or world view.

This is Me (Words and Music by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, from The Greatest Showman)

This song is about people who are very conscious that they stand on the margins – who do not feel accepted as they are – and who simply choose to assert their presence. Many faith groups have as a central message the desire to care for those who feel that they are on the margins, however one defines the “margin,” and knowing that being on the margins can be an incredibly painful place to be.

I love the way that the song starts out feeling quiet and vulnerable and ends with a feeling of strength.
