Remembering Steve Higgins (1950-2025)

Written by Felicia Urbanski

I met Steve through Interfaith Grand River.  He was an active participant in many of our discussions at meetings, challenging many of us to think deeper about whatever topic were engaged in.  One day after a meeting ended, I remember getting into a discussion with Steve about his passion - Tai Chi.  I mentioned to him that I found a connection between some forms of meditation and the Christian meditative practice of Centering Prayer.  From that conversation, we explored together what it would be like to give people an introductory course to both!  We got a space at the Kitchener Public Library, and it was an incredible experience for everyone involved, including me.  I also remember when Steve and Kaarina tragically lost their son, Brian, that many from IGR supported the family by attending their son's funeral.  That was a moment when I realized that interfaith dialogue is more than just the sharing of ideas - it is the sharing of the high and low points of our lives - together, as one interfaith family.
