For the Multicultural Festival, we wanted to try something new to draw attention. Jay or I

planned to sit with our acoustic guitars and sing some “songs of meaning and

message”. It turned out that drumming from a neighbouring booth and music from the

stage didn’t allow for much music on our part, but the idea did spur me to look at some

of the songs that I sing and pull some messages from them. I often find myself thinking

in song lyrics and over the next few months I’d like to share with you some songs and a

few of the thoughts that they prompt in me. None of these songs were written for a faith-based setting, but all of them have some elements that relate to faith, philosophy, or world view.

Annie’s Song (John Denver)

I love the idea of using a song that was written about romantic love between two people, and considering what it might say if the song is about one’s relationship with a higher power. From that perspective, this song is about being swept off one’s feet and filled with joy because of one’s relationship with that higher power.
